An earthquake map is a fast way to see where events have been recorded. It is not a complete report about damage, cause or public risk.

1.Report the observation first

The first paragraph should identify the reported magnitude, location, time and source. It should avoid describing impact before official information is available.

2.Separate automatic data from confirmed impact

Automatic event data can be revised. Impact information comes from official agencies, local authorities and verified reporting. An article should say which type of information it is presenting.

3.Link safety guidance to the authority

The article may summarize official guidance, but it should link directly to the public agency responsible for emergency information.
